It takes courage for one to achieve what one desires. Even though a goal may be small, the path that one must follow on their journey may present challenges that many would give up on. In one instance, Lois Lowry writes a novel which tells of a young adult living in a society where he has to take many risks to fight for what he believes in. In the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jonas takes risks to help friends, family, and his community.
Jonas shows great courage by taking a risk to ease the pain of his newfound friend, the Giver. For example, when Jonas came to the Annex for work, he found the Giver in pain, “‘Please,’ he [the Giver] gasped, ‘take some of the pain’” (Lowry 149). The Giver, the soon to be former Receiver of Memories, views his stored memories alone in his office; however, when the Giver is revisiting a memory of pain, he would have to suffer, knowing that he is bearing this burden to protect his community. For instance, as Jonas was fleeing at night from the community, he searched for reassurance to why he had to leave, for “...it was necessary [he thought] because it had the child seat attached to the back. And he had taken Gabriel, too.”(Lowry 208). Jonas planned to expose the community to the world, but he had to leave early because of the danger Gabriel was in; however, the main risk he was taking was to flee the community into a world that he knew nothing about. Jonas and the Giver wanted to change the emotionless life of the people in the community and the only way to do so is to share the memories with the whole community. Thus the community may change forever for the
