The Giver, By Lois Lowry

In the book The Giver, by Lois Lowry, the point of view is in one of the main protagonist named Jonas. Jonas lives in a “perfect world”. He is soon selected to become one of the most important jobs in the community which is The New Receiver of Memory. He is not to tell anyone about this job and the training that goes apart with it. He soon faces trouble between wanting to share these new things he learns or keeping it a secret like he is suppose to. He also sees all the flaws this “perfect world” has. When he learns that his a brother-like figure, Gabriel or Gabe, is to be released or sent to elsewhere, he makes a very important decision to leave the community and take Gabe with him to save his life and so that the other people community can have feelings. Even though he is leaving everything behind he still leaves. Lois Lowry, the author, leaves you to decide what happened the fates of Gabe and Jonas.

Slavery is my theme because in a lot of ways they are slaves to the community even though they don’t. My first piece of evidence is that everyone’s life is preplanned meaning that the Committee of Elders already has everything planned in there life. I found this in chapter 6, some examples are the 1-12’s ceremonies. In these ceremonies the kids are given certain things and certain things are taken away, also during the 12’s ceremony they are assigned a job that was chosen for them. Page 51 Lily says “ I’m glad I only have to wear hair ribbons for one more year…….Next year get my bicycle, too” Lily gets her bike and hair ribbons taken
