In The Giver by Lois Lowry, there is a 13 year old boy named Jonas living in a community without love, color, weather, and little change at all. He gets chosen to be the Receiver of Memories and receives many memories, including one of love and warmth at Christmastime. He realizes that his community lacks so much, and runs away, taking with him a baby boy named Gabe who was going to be killed because he wasn’t developing as fast as the other babies. They run away to a place called Elsewhere, which a place that the community believes to be somewhere other than their community. In the book it says, “For a moment he thought how easy it would be to drop beside it [bicycle] himself, to let him and Gabriel slide into the softness of the snow.” (pg. 220-221) Jonas had biked most of his journey, but now he had to put down his bike and walk because the snow was too deep. He throws the bike in the snow, and thinks of giving up and just drop next to the bike. If he thought of giving up, he must have been exhausted and almost unable to keep going. The other quote is, “He cried because he was hungry, and cold, and terribly weak.” (pg.218) This quote shows a turning point in the journey, because Jonas says that Gabe hadn’t cried the whole journey, but now he started crying because he couldn’t bear it anymore. Jonas knows that Gabe almost never cries when he is with him, and it makes him realize that they are close to dying and may not make it. If they still hadn’t reached their destination by this point in the book, they didn’t have much of a chance of being able to keep going without getting rest, or warmth and food.
