On November 19, 1863, Abraham Lincoln delivered a short speech called the Gettysburg address. He gave the speech at the end of a ceremony on the Gettysburg battlefield cemetery, in which he praised the bravery of all of those who died in the Battle of Gettysburg, and renewed his commitment to winning the Civil War. In this speech, Lincoln referenced the Declaration of Independence by talking about liberty, equality, and democracy. Lincoln also talked about what he was going to do to win the war, and how he was going to preserve the Union. Even though this speech was very short, it was moving, and it is known as one of the most famous in American history. His speech only had 272 words, and it took him under 2 minutes to say.
