The geography surrounding the Greeks territory was a leading factor that enhanced the chances of an advanced civilization. I do not believe that some sort of Greek “spirit” would get any credit for the creation of civilizations. The territory of Greece has mountains therefore broke apart Greece into smaller regions that created their own language and culture. The cities within Greece usually were located in the valleys between mountain ranges. The early Greeks developed city-states and worked together as defense, so they were not threatened by nearby kingdoms or tribes. Later on, this technique led to the development of democracy. As I have already mentioned, trade is another factor that led to civilization, the Greeks learned that trading was the way to get other goods they needed to survive. The art of ancient Greece was a huge influence on culture. Also, mathematics in ancient Greece led to the field of mathematics such as number theory, applied mathematics, geometry, and more. The Greeks also developed astronomy. The people incorporated astronomy into another branch of math. All of these areas are incorporated into today’s world and we use it on a daily basis. We determine the solar system as a heliocentric system because of Aristarchus of Samos and astronomy. Another idea was the time Heraclides Ponticus presented that the Earth does rotate on its axis. Classical Greek culture impacted the Roman Empire and spread throughout most parts of Europe and the Mediterranean Basin. Classical Greece is known as the foundation of the modern Western culture.
