Sometimes they would be caught by slave catchers and they would have to experience brutal punishment. Slaves were considered expensive property, it was crucial to get them back or else the slave owners would lose thousands of dollars. While the Underground Railroad and Holocaust were terrible experiences for people that were a part of it, they were made possible by people who badly used their gift of freedom.
