If there is one thing in history that most people can agree on, it is the fact that Rome had one of the most successful empires ever. There are four main components to have a successful empire, they include, military strength, political organization and administrative presence, a vigorous cultural presence, and a viable economy. Two people that wrote about this were Polybius and Aelius. In addition to them, Simon Baker also wrote about it and had a more modern take on it. In their writings, it is shown that the Roman Empire did have the four components that were needed to become successful, even though it fell in the end. There are connections between the four criteria to a great empire and the eight reasons for the fall of Rome. One of the connections was their military strength and invasions. Since they had such a strong military, they were being attacked often. Their strong empire made the Barbarians want to be a part of it, so in return, they invaded the Roman Empire. Another connected was between the political organization and the government corruption. Because the government was so crucial to the empire, there was a lot of pressure on the members of it. There was violence, corruption, and political instability including bribery, incompetent leaders, and problems with succession. The connection from cultural presence connects to Christianity and the loss of traditional values. These new Christian values were seen as more important than the Roman civic values. Finally, their viable economy connected directly to their economic problems in the future. Because they over relied on slaves, when they were on their own they had a labor shortage and less productivity, because they did not have anybody to do work for them. There was also a decline in tax revenue by the end of the empire (Tristano). For these reasons, although the Roman Empire flourished, it also died in the
