Gilgamesh and Enkidu are both heroes but once they were foils. At the beginning of the epic they were fighting. Neither of them can defeat each other which is unexpected because Gilgamesh is known for his strength and vigor. They realize each other's equal and contrasting power and decide that they must work together to defeat Humbaba. They become such good friends that Gilgamesh will even risk his life for Enkidu.
