Trait theory is a theory of personality that describes an individual’s trait, and are also used in predicting behavior based on the combination of traits. One of the trait theories is the five factor model of personality, which is a set of five traits with multiple facets that seeks to explain an individual’s personality. These five traits are extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience (Costa & McCrae, 1992). Using only a small set of trait dimensions, the five factor model was developed to represent as much personalities as possible from an individual. Furthermore, it also had also helped me identify which factors of my personality that could aid me in overcoming my challenges at West Point. The most common of these is the neuroticism domain, which I scored low compared to other college students. This means that I hardly ever encounter negative emotions and less inclined to anxiety than the normal college student is. This has served me significantly in managing my academic problems, since I have the ability to stay positive and strong even amid intense circumstances. At a rigorous academy such as West Point, it is important not to easily give up when facing any difficulties, as even the little issues can grow into serious problems. My low score in neuroticism domain also shows that I am not as embarrassed or shy when conversing with strangers as most students are. This is a crucial trait for myself since I must always have to seek for help and have no shame in seeking out assistance to improve in academics. Additionally, my high score in agreeableness domain contributes to my leader development at West Point. My score in agreeableness demonstrates that I have moderate trust to others, but are not easily fooled because I recognize that people can sometimes be deceptive. Erikson’s psychosocial theory and Marcia’s theory of identity give me better understanding of what I am going through in developing my identity by learning the characteristics of the stage I am currently at. This will also help me overcomes any confusions in my life by realizing that this is simply a stage, which I will eventually pass if I remain focus on what I am now and what I want to be. The Five Factor Model gives me a better understanding of my personality through five major traits with had described my personality almost accurately. After taking the NEO PI-R test, I now know the strengths and weaknesses of my personality, which had made me realized I still have many room for improvement.
