Five Emotional Responses

I chose depression because I have suffered from depression on and off for the past three years and I still don’t know all of the risks of being depressed. Another reason why I chose depression was because a year ago a friend of mine asked me what it was like to be depressed, I responded with it’s like drowning, except you can see everyone around you breathing. Everyone sees their lives in different ways and we all react differently to depression. For example when men are depressed they don’t necessarily acknowledge the feelings of self-loathing and helplessness. When men are depressed they complain about fatigue, irritability, sleep problems, and loss of interest in work and hobbies. Ways to tell if men are depressed is by their levels of anger, aggression, violence, reckless behavior, and substance abuse. Although women are more likely to become depressed men are actually more likely to commit suicide. Smith says that women are more likely to become depressed because of hormonal factors. When women are depressed they are more likely to have more pronounced feelings of guilt, they’ll sleep excessively, overeat, and they will most likely gain weight. Women are also more likely to suffer from seasonal affective disorder, which we will learn about later on. Depression in teens is different than in adults, this is why I am going to focus more on teens in this paper. When teens are depressed they may seem sad but that is not always the case. The main think to be looking for if someone thinks a teen is depressed is irritability. Teens that are depressed will probably be hostile, grumpy, or easily lose their temper. I know from experience that when a teen is depressed they will lose their temper very easily. I remember last year it got to where someone would complement me and I would get mad at them and would start yelling at them. If this ever happens get help, and find out what level of depression they have. (Smith, M., Saison, J., & Segal, J. (2015). Depression Symptoms and Warning Signs. Retrieved September 2,

Psychologists and other mental health care professionals see mental disorders, especially depression, as the horrible diseases that they are, and not just something that can be handled without professional help. This research is necessary in helping to prevent the suffering of those with depression by urging them to get help, instead of just struggling in silence. The purpose of this research is to show that many people, including children who rely on others to get the help that they need, often need assistance in getting the help with mental disorders that they deserve?
