Beowulf , the longest poem written in Anglo-Saxon, was written in around 675- 850 A.D. It’s author is an unknown cleric who narrated the story of a hero, Beowulf, who fights against beasts in order to keep his town safe. All of the monsters he has to fight have several things in common, which make them feared by all.
Grendel is the first monster Beowulf fights. He is a monster full of rage, ‘‘spurned and joyless.’’(Beowulf, page 24) Just like his mother and the dragon Beowulf fights, Grendel is a destructive and savage monster, who is hated and feared by all, he is a ‘’hell brute…enemy of mankind.’’ (Beowulf, page 42) The men that saw him, who ‘‘quartered together’’ knew Grendel’s capabilities and that he could, ‘‘Before morning he would rip

‘‘When the dragon awoke, trouble flared again.’’ (Beowulf, page 73) Fear rose once more with the up come of the new monster and his misdeeds that showed his strength, ‘‘The dragon began to belch out flames and burn bright homesteads; there was a hot glow that scared everyone.’’ (Beowulf, page 73) Savage and powerful also are characteristics of this monster. ‘‘The fire-dragon had raised the coastal region and reduced forts and earthworks to dust and ashes.’’ (Beowulf, page 74) Subsequently, after three destructive attacks, Beowulf fights the dragon, alongside Wiglaf. As accustomed, the monster is defeated by Beowulf, but this last battle also claims Beowulf’s life. ‘‘The dragon from under-earth, his nightmarish destroyer, laid destroyed as well, utterly without life.’’ (Beowulf, page 89)
As portrayed in the story, all of the monsters Beowulf has to fight have things in common. All three monsters insight fear and strength as some of their characteristics, as well as bring destruction to the town. But, it didn’t matter how big, mighty, feared or evil the monsters were because the most important thing is that Beowulf, our hero, defeated them

The dragon is described as being enormous and breathing poisonous fire. It is told that when attacks the dragon, his sword fails, implying that the beast is much stronger than any other he has faced. The dragon also is capable of burning down the throne, which can be interpreted that he is not a creature that has any regard for the idea of God, he is the Devil. The fight with the dragon serves to show Beowulf’s weaknesses, his aging and stubbornness. He orders his men to let him fight alone, and the majority of them listen, showing how his egoistic manners and unwillingness to accept help ultimately led to his…

Grendel Versus Grendel Grendel can generally be described as a brutal monster, that to everyone's best guess came from the devil himself, however, we can see that there are differing descriptions of this violent, monstrous character. The depiction of Grendel in the novel by John Gardner, and the depiction of Grendel from the excerpt from Beowulf is mostly similar, both are seen as a brutal monster, but we see a more in depth analysis of who Grendel actually is specifically, in Gardner's description and he gives further detail in to Grendel's thoughts, personality and worries, whereas in the excerpt, we get little to no details or background on Grendel. Our first example in how Grendel is more developed in Gardener's interpretation is that…

He stuck it deep in the dragon’s flank” (page 99, line 2703-2704).…

The story Beowulf focuses on a battle between the hero and a terrible monster that harasses the mead-hall of King Hrothgar, leader of the Danes. Beowulf presents the monster, Grendel, as a horrific beast but by the 20th century, after hundreds of years of storytelling, his character seemingly evolves into a young, confused boy with psychological issues. The novel Grendel, written in 1971 by John Gardner, is a first person account from Grendel’s viewpoint. Grendel presents a different perspective than that in Beowulf because Gardner dives deeper into the psychology and motives of the monster rather than simply treating him as an animalistic devil.…
