In the poem “Not Bad, Dad, Not Bad” by Jan Heller Levi, a child talks about watching their father swim, and thinking about their relationship with their father. One can reasonably infer from the poem that the relationship between the child and the father is mostly on good terms, but still a little rocky. The child seems comfortable enough with the father, commenting light-heartedly about the funny way the father breathes while swimming. “[T]he funny way you breathe/your mouth cocked as though you're yawning”(3-4). However, the child reveals later on that they were too critical on their father in the past, and always had wanted him to become his ideal, perfect version of a father.…

Donald Latumahina states in his article, “3 Reasons Why Failure is the Key to Success,” that “The only thing that separates people who succeed from those who don’t is a proper understanding of the power of failure. Success requires that you learn from mistakes and missteps along the way rather than falling into despair and giving up” (Latumahina, Donald). As Latumahina states, failure often affects people negatively leading to them giving up. All too often, people fail, react negatively, and turn to addiction or other unpleasant things.…

Socrates argues that “the secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” In order for me to become more successful, I will need to overcome the fear of failure. The aritcle “Strategies for Learning from Failure” by Amy C. Edmondson discusses how organizations deal with failure. Edmondson suggests that failure is inevitable, but organizations that correct and learn from their failures succeed. In order to correct and learn from one’s failures, one must know the difference between failure and fault, create a learning culture that encourages its members to take responsibilty for and learn from their failures, and understand that all failures are not created equal.…

This is an autobiography comprised on how a dad’s alcoholism affects not only the author but his family. The circumstances in which you are raised have a large impact on the type of adult that you will be. Thus, how you are raised also affects how you will raise your own children and how they will grow up. What caught my attention about the writing of the autobiography was the how relatable and clear the details within the document were. For example, the first line of the story is “my father drank,” nothing more had to be said because you knew the dad was a drunk and he did not like that his father was this way.…

Our mindset must be programmed to perceive failures as temporary. Failure is a pre-requisite to success and it is only temporary. When we fail, it is time to assess and learn from our mistakes. Then, we must find another way and still move on until we reach the door of success, never wavering to whatever obstacles that may hinder us. We should open our minds and expect instances when we will be confronted with obstacles that would result to making a decision whether to continue or not.…

“The greatest glory in living lies not in never failing, but in rising every time we fail”, stated Ralph Waldo Emerson. What Emerson is trying to explain is if people do not experience the consequences of failure and learn from it, then one will not achieve the greatest glories of living their life. His view of failure being a successful idea, rather than a negative idea, expresses how incompetently failure is labeled in today's age. Consequently, if failure is deemed to be feared to accomplish, then everyone who wants to try succeed may never attempt to do so. Thus, failure is not something we should fear and view as a negative notion, but instead we should embrace and learn it is something positive that leads to the foundations of success.…
