I work to address what was once present as away to prolong memories. I am thinking back to how we viewed the world when we were children, how everything we encountered in the world felt so much larger and simple than it actually was. Growing up my grandmother’s living room was full of fragile and breakable heirlooms and, I was a bull in a china shop. Whenever something broke, I would open my mouth and tear off a piece of my bubble gum to adhere the broken pieces back together. While my grandmother never seemed to notice, my attempt to fix these valued objects was only a temporary bandage to fix the fracture. As we progress through our childhood we have moments that alter this perspective for us, we experience the things in life that require us to harden our edges. In my teen years, I experienced a lot of death in a short period, losing multiple people who were all close to me. Some of these people died of natural causes and we had time to prepare and say goodbye while others were abrupt and left much unfinished. I use the balloon as a representation of both the childlike wonder that is associated with the object and also the impending short life span they have.
