Another member of the United States Intelligence Community that has a notable role in the protection of the United States interests is the Federal Bureau of Investigations or for short, FBI. Unlike the CIA, the FBI does not directly involve itself in foreign intelligence. The FBI operates under the Department of Justice with a primary focus on federal criminal investigation and domestic intelligence but sometimes there is a cross over and the FBI finds itself involved in terrorist and foreign intelligence. The NSA works with the Central Security Service which was established in 1972, 20 years after the NSA was established. The CSS was created to promote a full partnership between the NSA and the cryptologic elements of the armed forces. The NSA/CSS has many government wide responsibilities which include providing products and services to the Department of Defense, the Intelligence Community, government agencies, industry partners, and select allies and coalition partners. They also deliver critical strategic and tactical information to war planner and and war fighters. Being a key member of the Intelligence Community requires a great deal of confidentiality, that is why the NSA/CSS has an Information Assurance and Signals Intelligence missions set in place. The Information Assurance mission confronts the challenge of preventing foreign enemies from gaining access to sensitive: national security information. The Signals Intelligence mission collects, processes, and disseminates intelligence information for intelligence and counterintelligence purposes and to support military operations.
