    1. Individual Component: Profile Patricia June O’Shane was born in 1941 into an interracial family (a rarity for that period), at a time when it was common practice for the removal of children from their families where it was deemed children were being neglected (McIntyre & McKeich, 2009). The removals often triggered children to feel disconnected with their culture/traditional ways and their family’s history (Cowlishaw, 2004). Both of Patricia’s grandparents had been removed from their families, which she believes is why her grandfather encouraged his grandchildren to question what they believed to be wrong in the world (O 'Shane, Miller, Miller, & O 'Shane, 2010).…

An excellent way to illustrate a difference in culture or ethnicity is in an interracial relationship. Established on personal experience, I have concluded that interracial relationships can be very demanding and effortful, particularly when there is a great significance in cultures. An interracial couple who are both from North America may not experience as much work as what I experienced. There may be some cultural differences, but it may not be as significant as a couple from different sides of the globe. I have been in two relationships of the sort, and the first one was extremely laborious.…

Writing Assignment 2: Explaining and Applying a Key Concept in Your Own Words Racial formation, as presented by Michael Omi and Howard Winant, is the process through which a society assigns racial categories to the groups of people living within it, with the notion of “race” being constructed through both cultural representation and social structure. Racial formation involves the creation and destruction of stereotypes throughout a period of time, and is connected to hegemony, which is the way that a certain society is organized and ruled (Omi, Winant 21). An artificial racial hierarchy is often created from these stereotypes, which is then spread throughout society according to the interests of the ruling class and legitimated through social…

The Role of Race In Romantic Attraction to Race in Intercultural Dating Attraction is a popular field of study in psychology. In a mixed society that we exemplify today in America, it is common to see people of multiple races and ethnicities but what influences race and ethnicity have on everyday life such as it pertains to attraction is something that we are still discovering. Although the general population may not always consider how races and ethnicities play a role in our procreation and attraction to sexual partners, empirical evidence supports that race effects attraction (McClintock,& Murry, (2010). Observing how race effects attraction, and what effects…

This week’s readings exemplify scholarly and theoretical attempts to conceptualize race and racism in a way to effectively address and challenge systematic, structural racism that has evolved throughout the history of the United States socio- politically, historically, and culturally. Omi and Winant trace the lineage of race and racism in the US, focusing on the theoretical paradigms of race and their shortcomings as well as the contemporary evolution of racism coupled with neoliberal economic developments. Feagin similarly explores the legacy of racism in the US from a Marxist perspective. Taken together, these scholars problematize systematic racism that continues in the contemporary American society and argues for new ways to conceptualize…

In our society, there are several incidents where some people believe it is not correct to be in a relationship. One of these, conflicts, interracial relationships, is still happening today. Nearly fifty years since the law was passed and even longer since the end of slavery, and there are still people, who believe such an idea to be disgusting or immoral when in reality, it does not affect society in any way. In 1967, the Supreme Court had decided state bans on interracial marriage were unconstitutional.…

In today’s digital world, we are most likely to meet a potential lifetime partner going to online dating sites than going to a bar. My husband and I were to two full time working single parents who didn’t like to drink or go to bars (we rather play video games hahaha). We met online through InterracialCupid.com, a dating site for single people looking for love and friendship with interracial singles of different ethnic backgrounds. This dating site suits people who like to venture outside their race and culture when it comes to dating. I think one of the advantages of interracial online dating is allowing you to learn about another culture, a new language and can give you a new perspective on the world.…
