The Evil Haunted Shrub: A Short Story

The wind blew as the flame colored leaves fell from the tree and plummeted onto the ground. I could practically feel the seasons transitioning from summer to autumn as today happened to be known as "The Evil Haunted Shrub." Suddenly, she forced me down, to lay on a deserted bench among the forest and the woman raised a dagger above me, I screamed "What are you doing?" The miniature, but deadly sword plunged into the grass and we made eye contact when she said "I have no choice my dear. I must kill you or you will become evil like me." As I look up at the sky, which is blood red like the sun stabbed it so it could get away from its eternal partner,I begin to hear the horrible noises of these sky creatures. Their horrible squealing draws everything's attention because it sounds the an incantation to summon the devil from the pits of the underworld. The howling wind joins in trying to make the summoning happening quicker but instead it makes me feel like my ears are going to bleed and starts to cast a sleeping spell on anyone caught in this siren song. The trees become alive to this bewitching tunes as their rodent inhabitants begin to run around trying to attack one another like wolves attacking a deer. Next door the neighbor’s rowdy brats come outside, probably because this is their favorite tune, with their wild and atrocious dog to play game of run around and destroy the yard or as most call it fetch.…

Yes, I’d seen trees before; our city streets had trees. That conglomeration of trees, near our new home, was new to me; there were so many. My young eyes couldn’t see beyond the tree line. Eyes are the Window to the Soul Darkness flooded the sky, as the night air started to come in, over the dark gloomy campsite. The leaves and branches in the deathly, ancient, gnarly trees whispered tales of past campers. As the Jarvis family settled into their campsite, Noah noticed a mysterious mist spiralling across the fields towards the worn out gates of the cemetery. Dad called out to Noah’s older brother and cousin to help assist in setting up the camping gear. The forest guide had told them before-hand that the only clearing was near the gate of the cemetery if they wanted to camp.…

“What to write, what to write, what to write,” I thought out loud, “Short story ideas are harder than I thought!” We had commenced our short story unit in English. I was striving to come up with some ideas sitting on a stump along the primordial trail. Vines engulfed the forest in a corybantic scheme, encasing it in a velvety film of nature. Scintillating and radiant wildflowers grew along these vines, with butterflies of every discrepancy ravenously fluttering along these flowers.…
