Beowulf, prince of the Geats, heard about Grendel and ordered a boat and fourteen other warriors to go aid Hrothgar and his men. Beowulf was the “mightiest man on earth” and was also very strong and powerful. After Beowulf and his men arrived, Hrothgar’s watchmen questioned Beowulf as to why he has come to Hrothgar. Beowulf answered him: “---Beowulf is my name, If your lord and master, the most renowned son of Halfdane, will hear me out and graciously allow me to greet him in person, I am ready and willing to report my errand.”
Impressed by Beowulf and his warriors, one of Hrothgar’s men questioned them as to why they made the voyage to Hrothgar. Beowulf told the man that he heard the news of Grendel and wished to see Hrothgar. Hrothgar welcomed Beowulf and his warriors to Denmark after recognizing who Beowulf was. Beowulf and his warriors were invited to feast and take shelter inside the Heorot. During the feast Beowulf was bragging about the beasts he has previously defeated and claims that he is the match for Grendel. Before night-fall the feast came to a close and Hrothgar left Beowulf and his men inside to prepare for Grendel. Plotting to battle the dragon, Beowulf orders for the black smith to make him an all iron shield because wood would stand no chance against the dragon. Reflecting back on his life and previous battles, Beowulf, senses his death and becomes sad at heart.
