The Anglo-Saxons had a way about their writing, the way they made their poems come to life like a vivid picture or movie in one’s head. The epic poem of Beowulf captures the mind like one is watching the battle from the sidelines. It brings the audience in, and the amazing thing about the poem is that for the longest time these poems were not written down. Instead they were memorized and sung for the people, until monks finally learned to write. These monks not only wrote down the original poems, but some of them added a little twist of their own to reflect more on the beliefs of Christianity.

Wiglaf, the other soldier, ran to find the treasure to show Beowulf before he passed away. Beowulf saw the treasure and then told Wiglaf that he wanted him to take over being King for being so courage and staying with him. The citizens of Geatland created a tower in memory of Beowulf. They spread the treasures from the dragon in the tower and recollected some of the many memories with Beowulf.
Beowulf had many traits that characterized him as an epic hero. He proved to be a hero by being courageous in battle and fighting evil. He protected these people for fifty years by leading as their King and willing to risk his life in battle. An epic hero is a brave and noble character brought to life in an epic poem. Beowulf was known as the “the hero of all heroes”. In Beowulf’s last battle he sacrificed himself to defeat the dragon and gather the treasure for the people.
