You know when you’ve never seen somebody before, whether it’s the new kid at school or work. You take one look at them and you think ‘ew oh my god he/she is so ugly’ or ‘wow he/she is handsome/beautiful.’ You make all these judgments and assumptions about these people, when you have not met or had a conversation with them.This is called judging a book by its cover. In William Sleator’s short story “The Elevator” takes place on an elevator. Where Martin is judging a book by it’s cover. Martin has a fear of this fat old lady that starts riding the elevator, everyday and everytime he is on.
Martin assumes things about this fat old lady, when he has never had a conversation or even said a word to her. “What was she doing? Had she been waiting for him? Was she riding with him on purpose?” This illustrates that Martin is scared of this fat old lady because he has never seen her before and it frightens him that she might be trying to do something bad to him.
Later on in the story there is a scene where we find Martin judging the fat old lady again “She had to be crazy. Why else would she stare at him this way? What was she going to do next?” This shows that Martin is alarmed that the fat old lady is crazy and that she is stalking him because every time he rides the elevator he expects the fat old lady to be on and …show more content…
We can’t really make any inferences about her because it doesn’t tell us much about her. But what we can interpret is that Martin had no right to judge or think bad things about this fat old lady, because he never properly talked to her. Just because you think something about a person doesn’t mean it is true. Don’t be like Martin and think bad thoughts about people who you have never met before. That only makes you the bad person.
