ENG 1100_04 Critical Summary “The Egg and the Sperm” by Emily Martin focuses particularly on the stereotype male and female roles in the society. The writer also looks at the biological processes of both genders and relates it with the evident of today’s world stating that these gender roles and stereotypes are extended much more to the outer world than just to biological human processes but the fact cannot be denied that to understand the society, one needs to understand the role of males and females according to the biological point. Being a female and having an egg, she needs for the men to come with a
sperm to go get her to this similarity the society works. A female depends upon
the male society for each and every thing.
The egg and the sperm traditionally describe the feminine and the masculine
personality and traits. However, these traits and personality reflects the historical
background of the society and its gender roles.
In the society the sperm has always been a symbol of power and aggression, however, the egg is compared weak and dependant. This is considered because of the cultural and the old traditions. The writer then points and tries to change the dominance of males and the
sperm by stating from a new research that’s says eggs plays a more active and
vital role in the fertilization by allowing the sperm to enter. On the other hand,
the sperm is much weaker than the society thinks.
The whole point of the article lies how Emily compared the biological process to
the gender stereotype exiting in the society even after advancement. The idea is
to treat both the genders of the society equally not only on the papers but also
