Unemployment has been an ongoing problem even before the Great Depression, it just wasn’t officially tracked until the Great Depression came about. Unemployment can be tough on an individual or a family, for they don’t know how they can provide for their family. While the government tries to help with unemployment, it is still there and present. Unemployment has not only affected an individual, but as a whole to the U.S.
The U.S government hasn’t officially started tracking unemployment until the 1950s, but it was around way before that. The Great Depression is of the early 1930s, when the unemployment rate was 23.6 percent this was the highest in modern times. Some economists believe that had it been enacted, it could have pushed the unemployment rate below 7 percent. As always, when it comes to American fiscal policy, there is no agreement on which plan is best (Krulick, Al).
Unemployment has three different kinds of causes for unemployment but with this the cost of an individual and the country is affected as well. There has been three categories of unemployment that have been agreed upon that these three are recognizable to the American society, they are frictional unemployment, structural unemployment and cyclical unemployment.
First is frictional unemployment this is when a person temporary transitions moving from job to job with either looking for a better pay or a job that more precisely matches their skill or because of a locale or family problem. Many farmers left their farms and entered the workforce. But when they failed to find jobs, they added to the structural unemployment statistics, as do factory workers whose employers have moved operations to low-wage countries. The final different cause of unemployment is cyclical. Cyclical unemployment occurs when there is not enough demand for goods and services in the economy at large to provide jobs for everyone who wants one. When businesses contract during a recessionary cycle, workers are let go and unemployment rises. And when unemployed consumers have less money to spend on goods and services, businesses must contract even further, causing more layoffs and more unemployment (Krulick, Al). With every type of unemployment there is, it has is effects on an individual. Unemployment can be a hard time for a family or even just a single person. It makes the person open up their eyes and realize what am I going to do or how am I going to pay the bills, let alone eat or feed my family.
