The Effects Of Damage To The Cerebrum

Improved Essays
In most cases, the majority of trauma to the brain takes place in the cerebrum. The cerebrum is the largest area of the brain and is divided into four different sections, called lobes: the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe, and temporal lobe. Damage to these lobes can have many long-term effects (Huffman, 71)

Located right behind your forehead are your frontal lobes. The frontal lobes essentially receive and coordinate messages from all other lobes of the cortex. They are also responsible for three more functions: motor control, speech production, and higher functions like thinking, personality, and emotion. Damage to the frontal lobe can cause problems with motor function, problem solving, spontaneity, memory, language, initiation,

Name one brain area you think could be damaged. Give evidence for why you think this would be. One brain area I would think would be damaged is the medial temporal lobe region, which would include the hippocampus which is the area responsible for recollection of memories. If this area was damaged, the effects would likely be very similar, as evidenced by Patient HM. Patient HM had his medial temporal lobe removed bilaterally and had very…

There are two major types of TBI, penetrating injuries and closed head injuries (Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)). Penetrating injuries are caused by physical objects actually entering the brain, breaking the skull. With closed head injuries, a blow to the head occurs; however, the skull remains intact.…

A rough blow to the head, neck, or upper body can make the brain move around powerfully against the inner walls of the skull. The frontal and temporal lobes are the common parts of the brain that are affected by a concussion because those lobes are the closest to a rather rigid bone. When the head rotates the front of the head moves a greater distance due to the fact that the neck is positioned posteriorly to the skull. Dr. Kelly states in his interview that the frontal lobe influences personality, planning, initiating, and organizing, whereas the temporal lobe is primarily the language functions and memory. The memory in the left hemisphere is the verbal memory while the right hemisphere is the non-verbal visual memory.…

The frontal lobe is often the area of the brain that is damaged in motor vehicle accidents as well as sports accidents as it is placed in the front of the skull, an area that could be damaged due to its location. For example, in a motor vehicle accident if the head were to hit the windshield it would be the frontal lobe that hit first. The frontal lobe is responsible for multiple functions of the body such as emotions, motor capabilities and cognitive impairments meaning that if it is injured those areas of a person will be affected. First, the emotions or neurobehavior of a person may be affected in ways such as being over- emotional, having a flat affect (emotionless), mood swings and alexithymia, which is the inability to understand the emotions in others. For example if a person had alexithymia they would not be able to tell that when a person was smiling that they were happy.…

Your childhood is a time to figure out who you are and what you want to do. The frontal lobe plays a major role in this because it controls the way you act. Your personality changes indefinitely as your frontal lobe does. For example, Phineas Gage, a railroad worker, suffered a life-altering accident and miraculously survived. A large beam was thrust directly into his frontal lobe, and he managed to survive, but he was never the same afterward.…
