Stress is the feeling of tension people feel when they are facing extraordinary demands and uncertainty about their ability to handle the situation effectively. It exists in people’s everyday life no matter how powerful, wealthy or happy the people might be. Academic stress can affect health, emotional and academic performance when it has become excessive. Academic stress may cause some bad effect such as commit suicide. A survey done in UK on 6020 students in 2002 has shown that about 70% of self-harming teenagers with suicidal thoughts have admitted that the cause was their concerns about the school performance and exams. Statistics also show that every year circa 200,000 teenagers worldwide commit suicide while about 4 million adolescents …show more content…
Listening to their favourite music will have a positive impact on students’ physiological function, such as diminishing stress hormone level. Music acts as a medication because it helps the students to relax their mind and body (Novotney, 2013). For example, students in Malaysia like to download their favourite Kpop songs from the application store so they are able to listen to their favourite song anytime. Next, students can catch up with their close friends. Nowadays, they will choose coffee shop to enjoy their tea-time session. Eating cakes and drinking coffee in the café with friends just to kick start their lazy afternoon. Spending time with friends helps the students to forget about the frustrating things which affect their emotion, and improve the relationship among them. A good friend will support, motivate and encourage each other during the difficult times to overcome the stress (Moran, 2010). Moreover, students can plan a weekend getaway with the family. They always can plan to go for the famous beach in Malaysia such as Pulau Redang and Pulau Pangkor. They can play some water sports like snorkelling, banana boat, as well as parasailing on the beautiful beach. It is enjoyable to spend quality time with the family and enjoy the happiness of a family reunion (Nauert, 2013). Nowadays students tend to sleep late at night due to overloaded academic tasks and this causes students to feel extremely stressful. Lack of sleep may cause the students to lose their focus in their lecture class during daytime. According to the research by Michael J. Breus, getting not enough sleep not only leads to anxiety, but it will also causes memory and cognitive impairment, reduced performance and alertness and even prior to injuries. Therefore, students should practice a good sleep habit by having at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep regularly as this will help them to deal with academic stress at ease and help them to stay alert and focus in order to get good grades in their academic. Moreover, students should exercise regularly. It’s really common that students need to cope with load of academic stress generated by tons of assignments and projects nowadays. However, students can overcome academic stress by exercising in a regular basis. According to Stacy Brice (2012), exercise will release endorphins- those little happy makers which had shown that it will help in improving one’s mood and eventually help out in overcoming anxiety. Students should assign time for exercising which can burn off calories and helps in reducing stress. Next, students should maintain a good eating habit in order to overcome their academic stress.
