As a fellow active duty officer of the department, I would strongly disagree and protest the validity of only officers holding a four-year college degree to be eligible for promotion to Sergeant. Although it is understandable that administrators want to move towards a command staff where those officers rising through the ranks are deemed professional; holding degrees in areas relevant to the performance of the duties of law enforcement and its operation, the experiences and life skills of those officers not possessing a degree is perhaps more effective in the daily performance of routine duties on the street. As suggested by Doener (2012) in “Introduction to Law Enforcement, An Insider's View”, the evidence of college-educated officers offering

On 05-01-2018, at 0249 hours, I received a radio transmission from Officer Hoopes requesting to respond to the area of Cuthbert Road for a motor vehicle crash that he was involved in. At this time, Officer Hoopes was on-duty for the 1900 to 0700 night shift and was assigned to the west patrol sector. I located him at the intersection of Cuthbert Road and North Barrett Avenue. Upon arrival, Officer Hoopes was walking outside of his patrol unit, 1608. On inquiry, Officer Hoopes related that he was traveling east on Cuthbert Road while looking down at his in-car computer (MDT) and typing on it.…

The academy training last from 12 to 14 weeks ("State Trooper: Job Description, Duties and Requirements"). I agree with the requirements that are needed, and the qualifications. Although I do believe that if a soldier returning home wants to join the police force no matter the age, they should be allowed to join. Just make them go through the academy to be trained in dealing with the…

Being a police officer for 18 years and currently a Patrol Lieutenant, this is an odd thing to assume because it against everything I believe and was taught. In most misdemeanor cases in Tennessee, officers have the discretion of whether to arrest or issue a citation. If the officer chooses to arrest, he must show a good reason such as there is a likelihood the offense will continue, there is a likelihood the offender would not show in court, or the arrestee has a warrant on file (Widgery, 2013). In felony cases, such as drugs for resale, the officer has no choice and has to arrest.…

Summary The article Early Detection of the Problem Officer by Dino DeCrescenzo, starts off by mentioning how there is now an unfortunate pattern of problem police officers, even though police officers are now considered to be better educated and trained professionals than before. The article focuses primarily on databases, that according to the U.S. Department of Justice, are “designed to identify problematic behavior and allow early intervention to correct misconduct” (DeCrescenzo 2006). Early warning systems became popular since the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act passed, which gave the federal government power to investigate police officers who abused power.…

A majority of the elderly police officers are ones who entered the force without any requirements as to having a college education. Then again, some of these individuals are ones who did not feel the necessity in retaining a college education after high school. These are the same individuals who will be required to go get a college education- and the classes that they will be allowed to enroll in are: sociology, criminal justice, and political science classes. From the three choices, the police officers will have to minor in one of the subjects, as well as major in another; for the subject that is left over, they have no choice but to receive fifteen credit hours. As for the officers who majored in criminal justice, they will have to go back to school and receive either their master’s degree; and for the ones who have a master’s degree, will have to go back to school and receive their…

For the crime-fighting role, their approach is more upright by battling and eliminating crime hands on. Another way to describe it can be “kicking ass and tacking names.” For the order maintenance role, they handle crime by tying to prevent before it happens.…

When I started to become interested into the realm of the criminal justice, I knew that police officers’ main objective in their job was to protect American citizens and their fundamental rights from possible harm. Yet, I did not comprehend that individuals’ roles as police officers was more well-rounded and diverse besides preventing crime. For the American police system, besides the educational and training standards that a police-in-training must endure, there are major responsibilities and roles that a police officer must take when on duty. The four main roles of police work follows the acronym LOIS: law enforcement, order maintenance, information gathering and service. Law enforcement basically consists of police officers detecting…
