The book begins with Davey, MacDonald 's brother, passing away. He didn’t just pass away, he took his own life by jumping off of a roof. Davey’s death made a huge impact in MacDonald 's life. Suicide is actually the 3rd leading cause of death in the world for those aged 15-44 years (Seether). A natural death versus suicide leaves more people to mourn and feel in shock. Not wanting to be alive anymore and dealing with someone dying of a natural death are much unlike each other. The people that are left over once a suicide has occurred experience an immense amount of guilt. When someone you know commits suicide you are now a suicide survivor, you have been left behind. It is very difficult to fully understand the grief a suicide survivor feels. When someone young takes their life, whether they 're 16 or 30, is it challenging to wrap your head around. When someone old dies, you know they were content and experienced all that life offers. Ending your life at a young age suffocates all who are left after your death. Davey and Rachel haven 't yet experienced all that life has to offer, they eliminated that option.
MacDonald, being a suicide survivor escapes from Southie and navigates toward the club scene. Punk music becomes lifesaving, a way to deal with death. “The heaviness of it, echoing through my whole body, made everything else go away” (MacDonald 67). Through this quote we understand the effect punk music has on MacDonald. He listens to bands such as Black Flag, Sex Pistols and The Slits (MacDonald 248). Although we don’t entirely know how Danny dies, we are told that he was found floating in a pool badly bruised. While meeting up with the Riordan family Danny had come up in conversation. Mrs. Riordan brought out Danny 's autopsy photos. This was a disturbing sight for MacDonald. He says “I had to go numb to look at the bruised dead face of one of the liveliest people I’d ever known” (MacDonald 232). It was suspicious how Danny passed away; he was the person in which his family revolved around. It was uncomfortable for MacDonald to see Danny’s picture on the wall but never see him in person
