The Distance Between Us Mami Analysis

In The Distance Between Us Mami, after coming back from the United States, is heartbroken after losing her husband to a different woman. When coming back to Mexico she is very hesitant to answer questions the children ask her about her time in America. Mami then starts to work and Carlos would meet her on her way home every night. One night they couldn’t find Carlos, but in reality he was hiding because of what he just saw. Carlos had seen Mami kissing her new wrestler boyfriend. The kids and Mami would then start arguing and later on Mami leaves to go be with her boyfriend and follow him as he tries to become a famous wrestler. They would then soon get into a car accident and her boyfriend would die. Just like the Pardoners Tale this shows how greed and lust for something better can lead to a painful end. …show more content…
They then start going to Abuela Chinta’s house and Mami is still viciously dodging questions and talking to the cab driver to have the kids stray away from asking her questions. Mami then, at Abuela Chinta’s, thinks the kids are in a different room and starts talking about her ex-husband. Like in the Pardoners Tale Mami is embraced to talk about her greed in the situation, but the greed is constantly there. She’s greedy for a new man and greedy to prove to her ex that she is something he’s missing out on. In reality there were many approaches Mami could have taken and personally I think she did choose a greedy route. She was constantly leaving her kids going to America with her husband, running away with the wrestler, and even living at Reyna’s aunts
