Since Dally and Johnny have some different experiences. Dally has gotten through a lot, for example his abusive parents and going to jail. His instinct is to toughen up because life is not nice, and that not everything goes your way. “‘You’d better wise up, Ponyboy. . . you get tough like me and you don’t get tough like me and you don’t get hurt.(147)”’ Dally learns to toughen up during his life and now he thinks Ponyboy should also toughen up. Johnny says the opposite of Dally. Johnny is kind and he tries to stay positive unlike for Dally. Furthermore Johnny thinks that Ponyboy should stay the same and to be himself. Being yourself and Unique Is the way to go. Johnny's last important words that he said to Johnny is to “‘Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay Gold. . .(148)”’ Johnny takes that to heart and knows thats it is best to be yourself.
In the The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, two different characters are later on to be shown similarly. Dally and Johnny come from similar home situations, that are tough. They both strongly care about each other because of those similarity and differences.
