Many people don’t know what they want to be when they “grow up”, as for my mother she didn’t know what type of religion she wanted to be in when she “grew up”. However, she did know the basics that she believed in which was God, the Holy Spirit, his son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Bible that being said she considered herself Christian and raised me as a Non-Denominational Christian. That was until my senior year of High School when my mom decided she no longer wanted to be part of the Non-Denominational Christian faith and switched over to becoming part of the LDS faith known as the Mormons and flipped my life upside-down with their different views of norms and values. Growing up Non-Denominational Christian is fairly simple faith and to me…

Christianity has always been a vast part of my life and an abundant part of me. I grew up in a Methodist church, the same one my parents were married in, and where I was baptized. My childhood memories are filled with skipping down the church halls to Sunday school and playing in our chimes and bells groups. Although I am not an extraordinarily talented singer, I was even a member in our children’s choir. I spent many summers at our Grand Mesa Methodist Church Camp and participating in our vacation bible school.…

We do live in a world in which religious reasonings justify violence. We often think of it in terms of Islam, but we forget that our own Scripture (Old and New Testaments) have been used to justify violence. There is the possibility that our own Scripture will continue to be used to justify violence. This book is not so much a defense of Islam, as an uncovering our propensity to use our Scripture to justify violence in our struggles with others. Christians throughout Christian history (and Jews also) have turned to Moses and Joshua to justify violence, but generally, in most eras and most societies, the vast majority of believers have not.…

The Unknown Religion The sun was out, the air was warm, it was the perfect Sunday and my family and I were getting ready to leave for the Gurdwara, also known as the Sikh temple. Ever since my brother and I were children, our parents instilled a weekly routine of attending our local temple every Sunday afternoon. After the sermons, we ate langar, which was a free meal welcome to all, where I was able to eat great food, socialize with my friends, and do seva.…

Faith is inevitable; it’s the spirit of wisdom and the acknowledgment of a Higher Power. I am most thankful for being raised as a Muslim. Through my years of growing from a child, to a teenager, to a young adult, and now to a mother –I have come to realize the obligation of duty, the necessity of belief, and the requirement of love for embracing religion. As a child, I felt most estranged from my fellow classmates because my religion was not the same as theirs. It was the year I was starting fourth grade, and my parents had this brilliant idea to move our family from a diversely ethnic Chicago to an all-white school in the suburbs.…

At a young age, I was a good God-fearing Christian lad who prayed every night and went with my grandmother to church because my parents either worked or were too exhausted to go. As time went on, though, Greek Orthodox Church became less of a priority. Even my grandmother stopped going often, only on holidays. In teenage years, my mind became engulfed by science, girls, and making sure my hair looked alright. This is the one I rely on the most, whether it is by attending a youth or Sunday service this is where I sincerely find my peace. I will say a prayer daily or in that moment of stress and find the clear thinking I need to continue to work through it.
