In different cultures, one is taught many virtues, but in order for that person to actually acquire a virtue that person must display it consistently. For instance, a person who wants to learn to be courageous, that person must practice it in a given situation. If a guy finds a girl attractive and would like to ask her out on a date but is afraid to do so, this guy must build up nerve and ask the girl out because that is the experience that he needs in order to become courageous. However, if the person does not ask the girl out because he is fearful and timid, then this person will not learn what is like to be courageous.
