The diagram of the atom Carbon-12 represents an ion and an isotope. Carbon-12 has six protons and six neutrons in its nucleus, as shown on the diagram. Outside of the nucleus, this atom has five electrons. The protons are shown in the color orange, neutrons are in the color blue, and electrons in the color teal. The scientific principle subatomic particles says they are smaller than the atom itself, meaning protons with a positive charge, neutrons with a neutral charge, and electrons with a negative charge are all subatomic particles. Carbon-13 contains six protons, seven neutrons, and six electrons. The scientific principle subatomic particles states subatomic particles are smaller than the atom itself, meaning protons with a positive charge, neutrons with a neutral charge, and electrons with a negative charge are subatomic particles. By having this information, you can figure out if Carbon-13 illustrates a neutral atom and an isotope. Carbon-13 contains six protons and six electrons. When finding the net charge of an atom, you have to subtract the number of electrons from the number of protons. In diagram two that would be six minus six, which equal zero. An ion has a net charge, but this atom has a zero net change, so that means the atom has a neutral charge. The scientific principle neutral charge states the atom has the same number of protons and electrons, so the positive and the negative charges cancel each other out. Carbon-13 has six protons and six electrons, which cancel each other out and make the atom have a neutral charge. Carbon-12, Carbon-13, and Carbon-14 all have a different number of neutrons. Carbon-12 has six neutrons, Carbon-13 has seven neutrons, and Carbon-14 has eight neutrons. They all have varying number of neutrons; therefore they are all isotopes of each other.
