The Devil's The Devils Arithmetic

Once I first heard the title The Devils Arithmetic I figured it would be about demons and

supernatural creatures. While I was reading the book it made me think about the movie I

watched in my Facing history class the Boy In The Striped Pajamas. After I finish reading and

watching the Devils Arithmetic I understood the Holocaust and how the Nazis were treating the

Jews like slaves. The Devils Arithmetic actually referred to the book and the movie the Nazis

were the devils, and the numbers the Nazis tattooed on the Jews were the Arithmetic.

In the beginning of the story Hannah and her mom were talking in the car about the Passover

and how it’s important to go and see everyone. Hannah was complaining and didn't want to

Once

they started the Seder her grandpa Will let her have watered down wine and she enjoyed it.

Grandpa Will says she could open up the door and suddenly leads her so a whole different

place. She wakes up in a strange home she's never seen before and wonders where her

parents are. The first people she saw when she woke up was her Aunt and her Cousin. They tell

Hannah that her parents died from a fever and she was in one to but she survived it.

I can reflect back on when I first read the title I didn't know what it was about, but now I

can explain what it’s about. There was a Jewish girl named Hannah she really didn't

appreciate her culture as much as her family did. One day they was going to their Aunt

Eva for the Passover but Hannah didn't want to go. When Hannah was at the Seder they

allowed her to drink watered down wine and she liked it. Grandpa Will said she could

open up the door for the Prophet Elijah. So, now we understand what’s going on and what’s

going to happen next is a life lesson for Hannah. Supposedly at the end of the story that

lesson had a huge effect on Hannah and made her see her culture

The main character, Hannah, was the niece of a survivor of the Holocaust but did not feel that knowing about her own heritage was important till she ended up experiencing it herself. A lot of the youth feel as though their history is irrelevant and should stay history, the issue with that is if we do not know how far we have come we do not appreciate all that we currently have. Once people forget their roots it is like they forget their identity, it is as if they are lost souls and they are unaware. The second question is “Aside from weapons, how did the Nazis have control and power over the Jews in camp?”, in both the novella as well as in the movie The Devil’s Arithmetic the Nazis used a series of tactics to belittle the Jews resulting in control.…
