On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor. The attack, starting before 8 a.m., lasted two hours. The Japanese flew in fighter planes and destroyed 20 naval vessels and over 300 airplanes. Nearly 2,500 American soldiers died during the attack with another 1,000 injured.
