Rebellion is a common theme present in The Breadwinner. Because of the Taliban’s strict laws, Parvana and her family rebel in order to overcome the rules and regulations that the Taliban have placed on the people of Afghanistan. An example of this rebellion can be seen when Parvana and her mom leave the house without a male escort to get her dad out of jail. Although Parvana’s mother knew this was against the strict rules placed on women, she further rebels when she showed pictures of Parvana’s father in the hope that someone would recognize him and tell her where he was jailed. She also had to transform into a boy in order for her family to survive. Because her father was taken and jailed by the Taliban and their was no other men in her family to work, Parvana had to get food, and fetch water for her family. She also had to transform into a boy and risk being caught and hurt if anyone found out what she was doing. Another way Parvana experiences transformation in The Breadwinner is that she becomes more mature.
