Physical Security
As Margaret Rouse of TechTalk.com stated, “Physical security is the protection of personnel, hardware, programs, networks, and data from physical circumstances and events that could cause serious losses or damage to an enterprise, agency, or institution. This includes protection from fire, natural disasters, burglary, theft, vandalism, and terrorism.” In the world we live in today physical security is often over looked (Rouse, 2005). News organizations sensationalize the hacker as being the greatest threat to information security as we know it and it may be the case. It is extremely important and relatively cheap to purchase equipment for the detection and prevent of fire (Pagoria, 2004). Fire danger can be addressed by purchasing smoke alarms, heat sensors, fire extinguishers and sprinklers (Pagoria, 2004). These seemingly insignificant things can do a great deal to prevent fire damage to systems and prevent the loss of life. Regular training is essential to insure that all personnel are prepared in case of an emergency (Pagoria, 2004). Also having one of the security guards check the fire extinguishers every month to ensure that they are full and untampered with will go a long way to ensuring that they are operational when needed. The fire department should be called out at least twice per year to do a full inspection of the facility (Pagoria, 2004). Remember to also install manual fire alarms is also very important (Pagoria, 2004). The sooner that personnel are alerted to a fire, or potential fire, the better. Each computer room should also have heat sensors installed in them (Pagoria, 2004). These sensors can detect a dramatic rise in temperatures and alert personnel accordingly. Guards are located onsite to ensure that those persons are safe to perform their duties. It is the guards charge to patrol the facility should an employee become injured during the course of their workday the guard is trained in first response duties and, barring severe injury should be able to sustain the employee until the ambulance arrives. Also, as occasionally there are conflicts between people, the guard is charged with maintaining the peace to the best of their ability. While the employees need to come and go during the course of the day perimeter security will ensure that vehicles are secure and parking lots are safe. Even with these measures it is still important to train employees to be aware of their surroundings (Pagoria, 2004). Through training the hope is employees will be cognizant of their surrounds and will be able to recognize when something is
