The Crucible John Hale Character Analysis

One meaning of the word “crucible” is a difficult test/challenge or a place/situation that forces a person to change or make a difficult decision. Arthur Miller is the writer for the play, The Crucible. He intentionally he wrote this play to show his readers that people had to chose between good or bad. Perhaps more than any other character in The Crucible, Reverend John Hale best represents the title with the changes he demonstrated throughout the play. Being called to Salem as a “witch hunter,” at first he fell for Abigail’s accusations of witchcraft. Gradually, though, he realized he had been tricked. He tried to make everything better, but sometimes in life, you can’t. Hale examines them and asks questions to Reverend Parris and Abigail. He was instantly bewildered when Parris told him that Abigail and other village girls had been dancing in the woods around a pot—and that something had been moving in the pot. When Mr. Hale asks Abigail about it, she instantly blames it on Tituba. Hale immediately wants to see Tituba and when he does, he asks her why she would do that. Then Tituba confesses to witchcraft when Hale tells her, he will cured her from the evil. Hale tells Tituba,” You are God’s instrument put in our hands to discover the Devil’s agents among us. You are selected, Tituba, you are chosen to help us cleanse our village. So speak utterly, Tituba, turn your back on him and face God - face God, Tituba, and God will protect you.” Hale wants Tituba to tell him, whom she saw with the Devil. Hale asks Tituba, “Take courage, you must give us all their names. How can you bear to see this child suffering. Look at her, Tituba. Look at her God-given innocence; her soul is so tender; we must protect her; the devil
