One of the ways society influences us is by telling us how to dress. In The Crucible and The Scarlet Letter everyone was expected to dress in very mundane clothing that would cover everything and not bring attention to you. If you didn’t wear dull colored clothes like you were supposed to you would be looked down upon like Hester was in The Scarlet Letter. They made Hester wear a scarlet a so everyone that saw her would see it and know what she did. Even though most people dressed in lifeless dark colors she wore very bright, intricate clothing that was put down. In The Crucible and The Scarlet Letter the town was ruled by a theocracy and everyone was expected to believe the same thing and have no opinions of their own. All their rules were based off the religion they practiced. You had to follow the bible and everything it stood for. The laws were very strict and had severe punishments for breaking any of them. In The Crucible you would be hanged if there was even the slightest chance you were acting against their religion and performing witchcraft. Our culture has changed greatly from then and now.
