These two previous questions directly relate to a quote by John Proctor from Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. In Act IV, when Proctor was trying to decide whether to tell the truth or lie to save himselve, he yelled “ Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life”. His name was connected to his good reputation, which he treasured very deeply. He asked “How may I live without my name?”: how may I live without a good reputation. He so deeply connects his name and reputation that they are synonomous. Keeping a good name in the town of Salem was crucial to social survival, especially in the wake of those recent events; so to have a bad name would ruin him forever. Ms Heitmann asked the class these questions to reinforce the idea
