With the decision to create the Compromise of 1877, Democrats agreed to let the Republican candidate become president even though it caused a loss of economic power for the Democrats(History Alive # 319). When planning a dinner party, sometimes compromises are necessary. If a guest is attending who is gluten free, the host must redesign their menu to fit the needs of that guest. This causes the host to lose some control over the menu, as changes need to be made that do not affect all of their guests. The host does not want their guest to be worried about their allergy, likewise the government did not want blacks to be scared of people who may have been out to get them like the KKK. The 14th Amendment states that all U.S. citizens should have equal protection of the law. However, former slave owners, in order to avoid debt, found a way to get around this amendment. They proposed former slaves forty acres and a mule so that they could make a “living” but in reality, they were living in poverty and under power of their landlord who indeed did not give them 40 acres and a mule(History Alive #314). Some dinner parties allow children to attend. Although, the expectation that they will be treated equal they are not treated as equals to the adults. The children are forced to sit at the kiddie table and eat off of a different menu, usually consisting of chicken fingers and french fries.
