The Controversy Of Making Mistakes

Decent Essays
Mistake – what does it mean? It's really popular question and everybody needs to know the answer.
Last time when I made a mistake was... one week ago? I chose listening to music and surfing the internet instead of doing my homework. Time passed by really fast and I ended in the middle of the night, sitting by my desk. I might be sleeping and chilling before another day in school. Simple, isn't it? One wrong decision that gave me a lesson – some things don't take a lot of time, but we're making a big mistake postponing them.

Yes, mistakes are a key to great discoveries as they bring inventions and scientists closer to their original goals, as well as lead to unexpected discoveries. Proof exists that mistakes lead to great inventions because, according to the article “Lost cities, lost treasures,” in 1871 an adventurer named Heinrich Schliemann started digging in the ground of a Turkish city, seeking the lost city of troy”. Schliemann made a huge destruction around the area that he believed Troy lied on, but he was still able to find the lost city of Troy and the antiques. However in the article it says, “Schliemann’s actions erased important clues to Troy’s past.” Schliemann did find the lost city of Troy but he destroyed some of its land, but still managed…

Discoveries have been made all around the world by many people for a long time. I believe that mistakes are a key part of discoveries. When Schliemann teamed up with Calvert to fund the dig, Schliemann had decided to do it his own way in which resulted with damage towards the artifacts of the city. They still found the city of Troy, but if Schliemann had not teamed up with Calvert would the lost city of Troy still be discovered without much damage to the ruins? Possibly, but back in 1871, technology wasn’t as advanced as it its now.…

In medusa and the snail, a book by Lewis Thomas, he claims that mistakes are the base of human thought and that trial and error is actually a good thing not a bad thing. Dreams about the person you love are very clear, even though most dreams are not comprehensible to your conscience. The unconscious mind that produces your dreams uses a symbolic language in order to show you what is happening inside you and many things more. Why is this language so strange? Because you have inside you a terrible enemy: your primitive, wild side, that didn't evolve like your human side. In other words, the same way that you are a primate in many ways and you have an animal body, you have also an animal conscience.…

Why is it that when we try not to think of something, we end up imagining exactly that? It seems counterintuitive – after all, people are usually better at doing things when they try harder, and random objects (take white bears, for example) don’t usually pop into people’s minds. Daniel M. Wegner, an American social psychologist, wondered this too. He conducted research that was pivotal in explaining how humans deal with thought suppression. Wegner’s paper, “How to Think, Say or Do Precisely the Worst Thing for Any Occasion” delves into the topic of irony, and the counterintentional errors that everyone makes [1].…

Many people say that actions speak louder than words because actions show how a person really thinks. However, I disagree with the statement that actions speak louder than words. People can make an honest mistake in their actions, or actions could be seen out of context, which can lead to not understanding all of the situation. Also, some people might say that actions speak louder than words, yet, there are some people with mental illnesses who are unable to control their actions. People often do not think before they do things, which can lead to anything from misunderstanding in a relationship to the end of one.…
