Nature vs. Nurture Everywhere people go there is nonstop controversy on the debate of whether the inherited biological genes or the worldly environmental attributes affect a person in the ways of their personality, behavior, development or intellectual achievements. To most of the world, this issue is known as the nature vs. nurture debate. While some of the population believe our genes effect our way of life, other believe that the environment has a specific influence on our behavior and how we live our lives. Phycologists have been trying for centuries to decide if our personalities and traits are born the way they are or created through everyday encounters with our surroundings. Countless tests have been done, including one on twins separated at birth to determine if their separate lives led to them being completely different or almost identical in their occupation, living situation, and marriages. The nurture theory holds onto the environmental influences as the real origins of an individual’s behavior and personality. Environmental influences include conditioning to encourage a desired behavior from a child or to destroy an undesirable behavior being illustrated by said child. According to John Watson, a psychologist who has suggested that environmental learning is an important governing factor used during the nature vs. nurture debate, has once said he could train an infant chosen at random from a small group, and teach the child to become the type of specialist he wants. Watson declared “that regardless of the infant’s abilities or genes the child could become whatever he insisted, through sheer conditioning”.
