The 2011 anti-bullying policy, the Matt Epling Safe School Law, required that every school district develop a policy to address bullying within the school. The law states that schools must ensure bullying is prohibited and have safeguards in place to protect against false reports, as well as the person doing the reporting. The policy must also have appropriate people identified to implement and monitor the procedures, as well as investigate and report (Matt Epling Safe School Law, 2011/2014). The law has very little reach beyond requiring a written policy. There is no requirement in the law for implementation of the policy or the extent to which the policy must be implemented.…

Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy is a mental health problem and really is a form of abuse as the person either makes up or deliberately causes illness or injury to something in their care which is vulnerable, eg. animal, child, elderly or disabled person. They should really be giving care to them but instead the vulnerable become victims to them as they create or even cause illnesses. It is a way of gaining attention and is filling a gap where some aspect of their life is unfulfilled. The sympathy and pity gained makes them feel better so they repeat the behaviour. Arthur Miller, the author of The Crucible, characterizes the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 as a time driven by mass hysteria lead by a group of young girls who accused common townspeople of attacking them with witchcraft. While there was no solid evidence of said ‘attacks’, the extremely religious town of Salem knew no bounds with the persecution and execution of more than a dozen innocent people on the word of these girls. Because lying is easier than telling the truth, the girls continue to lie about being ‘witched’ to save their own skin and finally have power of their own. The play begins with the daughter of Reverend Parris, Betty, who seems to be in a trance.…

As we become more knowledgeable on the subject of bullying, we can notice how the effects it has on both the victim and the bully can be dangerous. In his article, “Bullying”, John Greenya suggests that the connection between bullying and school violence has become a growing problem that schools aren't doing enough to prevent. He does this by first explaining that “today, bullying is widely regarded as a serious problem in the United States”, then by stating “bullying not only begets depression and suicide but also serious crime, researchers say, not to mention poor academic performance, truancy and higher dropout rates” (Greenya). Greenya finally describes how “in the past, bullying has simply been dismissed as ‘Kids will be kids,’ but the findings from this study suggest that…

Personally, I found the film The Mask You Live In very eye opening. It focuses around how young boys are taught to portray their assigned gender and how they carry the lessons they are given into manhood. From as young as six years old, a boy is taught not to show emotion; that crying and hugging and any public displays of affection towards friends or loved ones in too feminine and unmanly. Boys learn to watch their father figures and associate them as the ideal role model for masculinity. When a father shows aggression towards a woman who then starts to cry, a young boy would not initially know what to make of it, and would possibly then associate violence with being manly and strong emotions as weak and girly.…

School bullying is an epidemic and often times when victims disclose they are bullied, intervention does not occur. Victims of bullying have human rights, and these rights should be considered and advocated for. Multiple studies suggest that bullying is a social injustice issue. (Polanin, M. & Vera, E., 2013) suggest that, because bullying may be considered the exercise of perceived authority or superiority in a cruel and unjust manner, it exists as an example of oppression in society. Any oppression in society against a person, group or class of people is considered a social justice issue.…
