Rhetoric Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” This statement is proven time and time again by David Rothkopf in his Ted Talk about how fear drives America. He describes how fear can motivate a country to make positive changes or cause the country to self-destruct. David’s well thought out claims, intelligent elaboration, knowledge of himself and his audience, and use of rhetoric strategies causes him to be a very successful presenter.…
I was terrified! Completely frozen with fear! What, oh what could this monstrosity be? Oh, what a terrifying monster!…
In the article “A Decade of Fear” Sam Robert explains how McCarthyism turned Americans against each other in the decade after World War II by creating fear on every single one of them, because they were either involved with Communism or knew someone who was. According to Robert “screenwriters, actors, directors, and producers were dragged before the House Un-American Activities Committee and asked to “name names” of colleagues who had Communist ties or sympathies” (par. 13). In other words, men and women were asked to expose friends and/or family who was associated with the practice of Communism. As a matter of fact, society did not really have a choice at that time, because the government was callous and did not care about their rebuttals.…
The Cold War created a large amount of tension not just between the United States and the Soviet Union but also within the country itself. The second wave of the Red Scare was a direct result of the Cold War and changed the overall moral of the country for a period of time. There were many cases that came as a direct result of the widespread panic and anxiety over the infiltration of Communist influence into society. Together, The Smith Act, Dennis versus U.S. and the HUAC hearings of the members of the entertainment industry embittered relations between social parties in the United States.…
Fear is the most effective means of governing. Fear can be used to manipulate people, bending them to what the person who is using it, wants them to do. Napoleon from the novel, Animal Farm, uses fear and manipulation to keep the others from questioning his orders and how he came to power, and it shows to have a powerful impact. The animals start to see Napoleon as a perfect, all-powerful being that they fear and even end up praising. Controlling others becomes easy when one knows their fears.…
The Red Scare was the result of a major fear within America. Americans felt the effects in their personal lives. Many supposed communists and communist sympathizers saw their whole life and their life works destroyed in front of their eyes such as the lost of friends or family members. It destroyed many families: brothers accused brothers, father accused sons. They were fired from their jobs.…

confessor stated that the reason there was no proof of a book that recovered. As if noting a weakness in her story, one confessor speculated “that the devil must keep the witches’ signatures because he “Carried [hers] away with him”(Triggs 2). There have been events all throughout American history that have been monumental and has had events that led into mass hysteria caused by fear. Many of these events were brought on by the ignorance of others. Events like the mass internment of Japanese-Americans during World War Two and the Red-Scare brought on during the Cold War with the fear of Russian espionage in America.…
Fear is an influential emotion that can cause many to perceive vulnerability. Fear can be used in different ways depending on the individual who enforces it. Once fear is used by the higher powered individual, the hysteria of it can take over and cause destruction to a community. Fear is used as a weapon by those who abuse their power to manipulate the innocent victims, which is clear in both eras of the Red Scare and The Crucible. The time periods are both supported by controversial claims involved with the witch trials and communism.…
Jared Keim Mr. Bowne AP English Language and Composition III January 24, 2017 Franklin Delano Roosevelt said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” These powerful words were meant to convince the American people to stop fearing that the economy would collapse after the Great Depression, but can be applied to a plethora of historical events. Fear has been used as a tactic throughout history and literature as a method for people to achieve their desired outcome. Fear is also exercised to get political power.…
Fear can lead to many things; it can be the driving factor to terrible occurrences, paranoid investigations, and sudden tension. A devastating example of fear causing negative feats is the Red Scare and the Rosenberg Trial. Americans were afraid of the Soviet Union because they felt threatened and didn’t want communism, and in an act of fearful behavior, sentenced to death two innocent people of involvement with the Soviets. This ended up being pointless, as they were never actually in cahoots with Russia.…
Fear specifically is defined as an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. Throughout the history of man, fear has remarkably had a prominent effect on the actions of many: used by dictators as a tactic to control, used in politics and religion to manipulate people’s positions. Fear materializes to the world in many forms; basic fears akin to those of spiders or heights, to more complex fears that are deep-rooted, like the fear of rejection or disappointment. Fear is an extensive part of life that has held a grip on people for many centuries in the past, and will for the many centuries to go. Identical to politics, entertainment platforms have manipulated fear to captivate…
The slogan that propelled Donald Trump into his influence across the nation, “make America great again,” shows that Trump sees America has fallen downhill and has hopes to improve it. Trump wants to see this country go back to the prosperous country it once was, but he does not know how to filter his words according to most, which makes him seem frightening. Despite Clinton’s accusation about the risk of Donald Trump, his clever use of scare tactics gives voters a sense of security because of his ideas concerning immigration and terrorism. According to Molly Ball, author of “Donald Trump and the Politics of Fear,” Donald Trump uses fear to his advantage in hopes of winning the presidential election.…
Intro After reading The Leviathan by Hobbes and the Machiavelli’s The Prince and the Discourses I would argue that the two authors have a similar view on how fear is politically relevant. What makes fear relevant to Machiavelli and Hobbes is that they believe that fear is necessary for a sovereign or a prince to stay in power. The two authors also believe that it is needed to keep the subjects in check and to keep them complacent. Today however there are people who question if fear is politically relevant today.…
Once something hits the media, it spreads like wildfire. All it takes is one source to report on a topic, or just report something in general before that little piece of information goes worldwide. One little click makes the news spread faster and farther. There are many techniques that can be used in the media to create buzz and attention, but one of the most common techniques is fear mongering. Fear mongering is defined by Merriam Webster as “The action of deliberately arousing public fear or alarm about a particular issue.”…
