Enclosed with this is the problem of undernourishment or undernutrition. Having a low calorie supply, low body mass index (BMI) and underweight are all used to identify the problem. This inadequacy leaves its victims susceptible to illness and premature death; it also makes them listless and unable to concentrate. On the other hand, overweight and obesity are the problems resulted by over nourishment. One indicator of the problem is high BMI. Though rampant in developed countries, obesity is increasing to inhabitants of urban areas in the developing world. According to them, reducing maternal and child malnutrition to counteract the effects and burden of malnutrition will help achieve the Millennium Development Goals. One of the main objectives of the meeting held last February 8 – 11, 2013 was regarding the evidence-informed recommendations to be used globally in view of using food fortification with various micronutrient powders for preschool and school-age children to be implemented for the period 2013-2014.
In the Philippines, they found out that around 4 million of the total number of preschool population were found to be underweight for age, 3 million adolescents and 5 million adults, including older persons were found to be underweight and chronically energy deficient, respectively. Overweight and obesity are also prevalent in the country affecting a significant proportion of children, adolescents and adults, which predispose them to certain nutrition and health risks.
