Because the pigs and dogs claim to be clever in Animal Farm, they receive an education. All the other animals, who are not considered intelligent, are only taught two things: “four legs good, two legs bad” (31) and “Napoleon is always right” (50-51). Most of the animals never receive an education, so they are unaware of Napoleon’s unjust actions. Similarly, the animals blindly obey Napoleon’s opposing decisions. Even though in theory communism is equal, it plays out differently in the book. Since the pigs and dogs are educated, they are not forced to do any of the labor work. They claim that they cannot do the physical work because they are doing all of the “mental” work. The other animals work for tremendous hours, and are manipulated into thinking that they are working fewer hours than before the revolution. In democracy, everyone is treated equally under the law. In a political sense, each citizen 's vote counts equally and every person has the right to oppose what they don’t agree with. Also, trials are conducted fairly. No one can be put into prison without having the opportunity to defend themselves in a trial first. In Animal Farm, fair trials did not exist. If Napoleon believes someone did something incorrectly or disagrees with him, then they are executed without having a chance to explain. Overall, the citizens benefit more from democracy. The aspects of democracy are less likely to cause a dramatic uproar of violence than the harsh characteristics of communism. Additionally, democracy provides citizens with natural human rights, which are not offered in communism. In a democracy, citizens are all truly equal under the law. Whereas, communist leaders are adamant about their principles. Though communism has advantages, its lack of safety, freedom, and treatment of individuals, prove why democracy is a more competent
