As the noose dangles, dread looms and by gazing upon The Conjuring’s movie poster that’s the intended effect. The Conjuring poster is effective through it’s the use of sinister imagery, an effective narrative told by the poster, and the colors used by the designer to give the poster an effective tone. Analyzing this poster will give the reader a better understanding as to why it succeeds in being an effective horror poster. Without reading the title, one can conclude that The Conjuring is a horror movie by the menacing imagery depicted on the poster. The noose hanging from the tree indicates somebody on the property had committed suicide. This idea is pushed further through the use of a shadow of the woman who killed herself. This gives the viewer an indication as to why the house in the background is being haunted by a demonic entity. This is not the only story this poster tells however, in ominous black letters it says “Based on the true Case Files of the Warrens”. This is significant not to just the plot of the movie, but the narrative the posters tells as well. The Warrens spoken of in the poster are referring to are one of the world’s most known and respected paranormal investigators. The two were a married couple who worked closely together on several hauntings such as Amityville, the Annabelle doll, The Haunting and Connecticut, the Perron Family and The Enfield Poltergeist. Together they claimed to have investigated over ten thousand cases and one of their most famous investigations of the Perron Family are the events that transpire over the course of the movie. This poster tells an effective story not just through its horrific imagery, but also the significance of the Warren’s input on the movie.
