Health can be defined as a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing. The studies shown that the concept of health and health education/promotion has been around for many years. Its origin came from ancient civilization, and particularly in Greek antiquity. Back in the day, people do not have the real knowledge about diseases. They believed that sickness is the punishment of spirits that live in trees, air, earth, and animals. Animals sacrifice to gods were considered as method of treatment. The prevention of diseases was based on plants, and herbs. But they did not know which herb or plant can provide medicinal benefits until they tried it. He developed a process call pasteurization where he studied the problem of spoilage of beverage. He discovered that bacteria or microorganism from outside was causing the spoilage of beverage. He concluded that all diseases are caused by preexisting microorganism. Not only he discovered the cause of illnesses, but he also came up with the idea about how to prevent them. Due to the industrial revolution, many people were moving from inner cities toward developed cities to find job. The life expectancy was very short because of the poverty and diseases such as cholera, smallpox, and typhoid. In 1850, Lemuel Shattuck, a bookseller and publisher from Boston, was concerned about health issues that people were facing. He dedicated his life to solve these problems. “Of the 50 recommendations which Shattuck listed, 36 have become accepted principle of public health practice” (Cottrell et al., 2015). His recommendation include food and drug control, environmental sanitation, prevention method, control of pollution in cities, control of alcohol consumption, creation of nursing schools, control of mental illnesses (Cottrell et al., 2015).
