The Color White In Lord Of The Flies Analysis

In the disastrous and murderous island of Lord of the Flies, author William Golding creates suspense and confusion as kids progress as their own evil selves in this novel. In the green and scar filled jungle, the sandy beach, and the rock and cliff filled mountain terrain in the boat shaped island, Golding portrays the color white in the novel as a symbol for purity and innocence for civilization. During Simon’s wrongfully killing for him being mistaken as the beast, the little boy is presented as an innocent being of civilization. The waters of the vast Pacific Ocean is the final resting place for Simon, for during his last living moments on land, showed signs of morality. As the shore waves wash over him and the blood seeps out of his body, “a [white] brightness dressed Simon’s coarse hair, and his cheeks silvered and [whitened} with the turning of [his body]”(154). As the Ralph and the boys figured that to be rescued they would need a signal fire, they looked for any help that they could get. Finally, the boys figured that they could be burning glasses. While Jack grabbed the glasses, “[he] tilted the glasses [as] the glossy white image [appeared] on the rotten wood”(41). The glasses create an image on a piece of wood that had no meaning to the rest of it’s existence. These glasses left a mark of an existence of morality through making the symbols: hope of rescue and destruction of civilization.
