Armuthaz Response Paper

Bellarmine University Armuthaz's text The Coffee-Mans Grenado Discharged Upon the Maidens Complaint Against Coffee is an unusual piece when compared to the rest of the texts that we have read in class so far. The rest of the texts made their points in scholarly essay type writings whereas Armuthaz presents his argument in the form of a spoken dialogue. This change in structure indicates that the consumption of chocolate is no longer a scholarly debate over whether it is healthy to drink or not because it is now being talked about and is common amongst most of the populace in England. This is further reinforced by how the milkmaids, who would generally be considered peasants in 17th century England, are also consuming it. This is a big change from the early days of chocolate consumption in Europe when it would only be drunk by the richest individuals and was regarded as an indulgent drink because of this. One of the key players in The Coffee-Mans Grenado Discharged Upon the Maidens Complaint Against Coffee is a writer called Democritus. During the 1600s there was an author named John Crouch who used the pseudonym Mercurius Democritus to write under and just a short time prior to the publishing of The Coffee-Mans Grenado wrote a piece titled The Maidens Complaint. (Ellis, 2006) Considering this and the fact the dialogue's Democritus also had just published a book under the same name they this Democritus probably represents John Crouch. Since Armuthaz inserted a character that represents Crouch in this dialogue this piece could represent coffee shop owners of the times reactions to Crouch's The Maidens

In 1978, Erna used the term ‘specialty coffee’ while giving a speech to the delegates of an international coffee conference in Montreuil, France. The main idea behind specialty coffee is that the coffee beans are well prepared, freshly roasted and properly brewed. Unlike the wine where only one company is responsible for planting, husbandry, harvesting, initial processing and packaging and finally delivering the beverage, coffee on the other hand is delivered to the final consumer after it has exchanged many hands right from the farmers to the millers to the roasters and brewers.…

Oscar Wilde ridicules Victorian aristocracy’s gluttony and self-indulgence by using hunger as a euphemism for desire. Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest stands as a parody of society, morals, and marriage during Queen Victoria’s reign. Conflict arises in the scenes of the play that feature food, such as: the stolen bottle of wine, Algernon devouring sandwiches meant for his aunt, Jack and Gwendolen’s bread and butter, and the muffins. Algernon bewilders Jack by eating muffins during a time of distress, in response Algernon says that when in trouble “eating is the only thing that consoles me” (Wilde 160). Algernon’s persistent appetite remains a common concern through the play.…

For this essay, the artwork chosen is titled Untitled, (I Shop Therefore I Am) by Barbara Kruger. This artwork was created in 1987 using the medium of film in order to capture the image. The subject for this artwork would be issue oriented based on the message displayed. This piece would also be considered to be abstract due to the message that is displayed in the photograph and how it makes itself look different. The artwork itself is what looks to be a reused photo for a previous advertisement many years ago, but the artist used a powerful message to cover up what was being advertised, and used the words “I shop therefore I am” in a giant red textbox with white lettering that is very clear to read when viewing the art up close.…
