During Cosmos S.1 Ep.7, I've learned about the event of lead poisoning around the world. This episode is about a scientist named Clare Patterson, whom discovered Earth's real age. Patterson performs an experiment called "The Clean Room" where Patterson studies tiny zircon crystals. He measures the lead and it is six times more than what was in the zircons. Then something serious occurred. Patterson's lead measurement numbers were inconsistent. He thought maybe that his lab had been contaminated. Martha Derthick’s Up In Smoke is a detailed look at federal regulation, legislation, and litigation through the lens of the tobacco industry. By providing a detailed chronology of tobacco regulation in the United States, Derthick is able to shed light on the centers of influence connected to the development of policy concerning nicotine and cigarettes. The narrative attempts to illuminate the relative power of industry lobbyists, health administrators, congressmen, and tort lawyers in these dealings. In particular, the book focuses on the power struggle between non-elected officials and private interests groups in determining regulation. Because non-elected officials and interest groups have no formal legislative power, their attempts to influence policy and regulation is often referred to as “subgovernment.”…

On the first day of my 4th period Pre-AP Social Science class, my teacher announced that she would be nominating 2 students for a scholarship based on their academic performance and service to the community. For an 8th grader, this seemed to be the most exciting opportunity I had ever heard of. It would allow some separation from my ultracompetitive classmates at one of the top middle schools in California. Even though history was not my forte, I devised a regimen that I would follow. I studied everyday afterschool, spent hours upon hours on projects, and never turned in an assignment without checking it over 3 times.…

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that up to 1 million schools in the United States have water fountains with lead-based parts.”…
