Everyone has heard of Narratives, and being critics is a one of those human instincts that comes naturally, but what exactly is Narrative criticism? Narrative criticisms focus on stories or events that help us make sense of specific areas in our daily human experiences. There are four elements that play a role in this. First off a narrative most consist of two or more events that are active. Also, they must be organized in a time order fashion. Thirdly, narrative has a casual or contributing relationship, and lastly it must have a unified subject. All of these elements are involved when analyzing settings, characters, and narrators. This is most applicable in the Adnan Syed case where it is very easy to choose a side and close the door to any other opinions. It’s very easy to see one side and argue any other opinions that don’t correlate to one view. Throughout the Serial podcast by Sarah Koeing the most ridiculed character is Jay Wild. He is a very important person in the case of Hae Lee, without him there would not have been a real conviction against Adnan at all. Why is this important though? Thoughts are up in the air when it comes to the truthfulness of Jays testimony, especially when he is involved, but gets off scotch free due to his allegations against Adnan. Although he was able to bargain a plea deal, he ran the risk of putting himself behind bars in order to let what he believes to be the truth out in the open. The choice of doing a narrative analysis on Jay Wilde was to see through his eyes the day leading up to the murder and the murder itself. Why do critics continue to give off the impression Jay Wild is lying and what has Jay’s role willing be throughout Adnan’s …show more content…
In Baltimore Adnan Syed was known for the most part as the nice, sweet, charming guy that is incapable of committing murder. Where as Jay Wild was known as more of the “bad boy” dealing drugs and was someone you would not want to mess with. Some peers also noted that he was one to fabricate stories so knowing when he was telling the truth could be a hard task. With two outstanding different reputations the setting helped the audience lean in favor of the villain, Adnan. Accusing Jay of lying was an easier coping mechanism than accepting the fact someone like Adnan was capable of murder. The many events in the revealing of the truth were both significant in some cases and in other, more proof that Jay was with Adnan the day of the murder like he says. Kernel events that Jay explains that help give authenticity to his testimony is the where about of Hae Lee’s car. Jay showed the detectives where she parked therefore making his statement more reliable. Another kernel event was Jays timeline of the day Hae was murder in comparison to the cell phone towers that logged where Adnan’s cellphone was located at during what time. Another event that Jay said took place was that they went to the mall after Adnan disposed of the body and Jenn met them there to pick Jay up, this is a satellite event because if Adnan had never murdered Hae in the first place who knows if they would have been there together, but Jenn is

Frederick Douglass and His Use of Rhetorical Devices “The political character of one’s actions is inextricably bound to the political status of one’s subjectivity.” So says Frank B. Wilderson III, a writer focusing on critical and racial theory. For many authors, their message is heavily impacted not only by how they relate to the message, but through their style of writing itself. In Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, the author has an incredibly personal connection to the anecdotes presented and retells his feelings regarding subjectivity when he was under the chains of slavery. However, Frederick Douglass does not only rely on retelling past experiences to convey a message to his readers.…

The concepts of genre, audience, and rhetorical situation are alike in their significance to the process of writing. They can be distinguished not only by their definitive meanings, but by a series of questions considered in the early stages of writing; what do I want to say, how do I want to say it, and who do I want to say it to? To these questions there are no clear-cut answers, empowering the writer to explore a variety of topics. It is important to understand that genre, audience, and rhetorical situation are not considered in a sequential order, nor are they exclusive to planning. In fact, the development of new ideas can occur in any stage of writing.…

The second reason I think Adnan must be innocent is because there are too many inconsistencies that Jay provides during his testimony while being interviewed by the police. Jay provides many stories, which sometimes do not match up to Adnan’s story or to the stories he provides. There were many inconsistencies that did not make sense, of which I will share the 3 that I found most important, which you can find in episode 4 called “Inconsistencies". The…

Contemporary TV: This Is Us This Is Us is a new NBC show that premiered on the 20th of September of this year and International Business Times reporter, Caitlyn Hitt, summarizes the beginning of the first episode with, “It centers around five people — one couple, two siblings and a big wig trying to discover his roots [who all happen to be celebrating their 36th birthday]”(Hitt). This Is Us fits into Jason Mittell’s definition of “narrative complexity” through its unique use of operational aesthetics, which includes the show’s use of a “narrational mode” type of storytelling, time shifts, and editing techniques to portray the plot in its pilot, “Pilot” episode. Through these and the show’s promotion, it was able to achieve an overwhelmingly positive approval rate from critics and general audiences and thus, This Is Us becomes an excellent example of the growing popularity of narrative complexities as the preferred choice of contemporary television.…

Even with all of this in mind, the court sees him as the main suspect and is not dissuaded by his normal persona. They pin him as Hae Min Lee’s killer by using the jealous boyfriend stereotype. Jay seems to be the only one that has a story that is sound enough to have Adnan as the main suspect.…

On page 71 of “The Journalist and the Murderer” Malcolm shares an important insight on how writers feel about who their subjects are, and who they want them to be. Malcolm tells about how Macdonald, was a genrally uninteresting person. She informs about the frustrations McGinniss had with MacDonald’s bland character, telling McGinniss “groaned whenever a new tape arrived from prison (from MacDonald), because of its contrast to the excitingly dire character of the crime for which he stood convicted: a murderer shouldn’t sound like an accountant.” In this line a critical problem with writers, and likely source of McGiniss immoral behavior, is seen. When writing about a subject the writer should not go into the project already determined the way the subject “should” sound.…

Many readers of the audience point that Mrs. Mallard died from the joy of her husband’s arrival but an important aspect that is often overlooked is the ironic juxtaposition set up by the author to truly show her feelings. The hate and bitterness of his “snarl” is the final implication as to how the Misfit feels about religion (O’Connor 645). Bellamy insists that the reason for the devilish message in the Misfit’s speech is due to his mission to play to role of the Anti-Christ. Bellamy asserts that, “The central message of the Misfit’s sermon, for a sermon is what his remarks amount to, is a familiar one in Flannery O’Connor’s fiction; there is no middle ground between absolute belief in Christ’s messianic fiction and a belief that like is nasty, brutish, and short,” (200). Katherine Feeley notes that the Misfit “embodies all reason and no faith,” which is the opposite of the faith-based personality of the grandmother (202). As Madison Jones remarks, the Misfit “may be haunted, at times tormented, by vision of Christ raising the dead, but he cannot believe it: he was not there.…
